Tom Morrell Tom’s interest in photography began when he received a Kodak Brownie camera as a teenager. His interest increased while on military assignment to Japan. There he was able to buy a much better camera and “photo ops” were plentiful. He worked in photo labs while in the Air Force and often “moonlighted” as a portrait and wedding photographer. He occasionally dabbled in photojournalism and taught classes in photography. His work has been published in national photo magazines and honored with numerous awards. On a subsequent trip to Japan, Tom was the only foreign member of a Japanese Photographic Society. He attributes his eye for composition to the knowledge gained while a member of this group of dedicated and talented amateur and professional Japanese photographers. (He also gained an appreciation for sushi and sake wine.) He eventually found his niche in nature photography, and his constant search for scenic and wildlife photographs has produced quite a photographic inventory. His lovely wife Becky, being his biggest fan, decorated their home with many of his photos. After running out of walls to display Tom’s pictures, Becky decided that Tom should share his work with others. For years he sold his work in art exhibits throughout southeastern Virginia. Now retired from the art exhibit scene, his work is available at galleries in Yorktown, VA, Hertford, NC, and Edenton, NC. Tom received an exclusive commission to provide all artwork displayed in the renovated colonial era courthouse called York Hall in historic Yorktown, Virginia. The Environmental Services Department in Yorktown, VA, decorated a new conference room with several of Tom's photographs and the York County Friends of the Library commissioned Tom to provide photographs to decorate the York County Library. Tom has a degree in photography and is a member of the International Freelance Photographers Organization, the Poquoson (VA) Art League, the Perquimans Arts League (Hertford, NC), and the Arts of the Albemarle gallery (Elizabeth City, NC).
